Empowering our Youth to Fuel our Future.

Three years’ worth of interaction with my students at the University of Nairobi’s Mombasa campus has instilled in me a sense of their undeniable yearning for change in Kenya and their deep desire to champion that change. Yet, these dreamy-eyed youth filled with visions of a better tomorrow are sooner rather than later crushed under the weight of our reality, which, adding salt to injury, does not acknowledge our youth, let alone include them in the daily running of our societies and nation.

How are our youth to govern our future if they are not included in governance today? How are they to learn if they are not given opportunities to lead whilst the older generation is still available to teach them? More pertinently, if meritocracy has little role to play in who gets which job and where in the public sector or the government of Kenya, it is no wonder that our youth are growing increasingly restless and frustrated at the affairs of our nation.

Our future lies not in the hands of our leaders today – we are witness to their theatrics and substandard work – rather, our future lies in the hands of our youth and to continue to deny our youth employment, leadership, entrepreneurial, and other creative opportunities is to destine Kenya to peril. Even if the argument were made, and assuming it had validity, that our leaders and the public servants in office today are doing a splendid job at running Kenya, to keep the youth unengaged in society and government is short-sighted at best and ruinous at worst. Kenya has many intelligent and capable young people bursting with energy, full of ideas laden with the promise of change and when given an opportunity, almost desperately driven to achieve.

In Kenya, the young person that is allowed to employ his/her youth fruitfully in service of his/her dream is not yet common. And amongst those who are allowed the opportunity to do so, fewer still have adequate role-models to inspire them to make the most of the opportunities presented to them. We are squandering an invaluable resource – our youth – by denying them opportunities, proper training, good role-models and failing to include them adequately in creating our present towards a better future.

Most developed or well-off developing nation harness the vitality and talents of their youth. It is imperative that we start to craft a reality that acknowledges our youth for the value they represent and the future they will inevitably be responsible for. A reality that offers our youth adequate opportunities to utilise their energy, talent, drive and potential. A reality that acknowledges that the world is changing at a far greater pace than the older generation have hope of catching up with and that our youth offer us the ability to keep abreast with these changes. A reality that is worthy of the wisdom we currently claim currency over our youth. A reality that not only promises but assures Kenyans of a better future. A reality I hope to live to see.
