Religion and God

Many of the people I know who believe in God belong to a religion or to a belief of sorts. Others, not necessarily belonging to a particular religion, still admit to a belief in God, which is usually expressed as “ I am spiritual, not religious”. A fair share exist, however, especially in Western developed countries, or alternatively exposed to Western cultures and societies for a period of time, who denounce God. Those who do not believe in God or who deny God’s existence, seemingly contradictory have no problem with the existence of religion, whilst vehemently refusing to acknowledge the existence of God. I know atheists who spew religious niceties and may attend church or mosque or temple on key religious festivals but will dismiss any consideration of the possibility of the existence of God. They can live with the existence of religions, but certainly not with the existence of God. Religions are, after all, just human institutions which have some benefits, albeit explicitly having harmed humanity for centuries on end.

Why are self-proclaimed atheists far more willing to forgive the atrocious sins of organised religions and acknowledge their cursory benefits to society, whilst the same atheists go on to vehemently deny the existence of God? Even if I were to accept the argument that all atheist equally denounce religions and do not in any way participate in them, Why are the ills of religions necessarily imputed on God? If religions are denied on the basis of lack of scientific evidence, what is the scientific evidence linking organised religions and faiths to God? What scientific basis do we have that associates the existence of religions, and their consequent beliefs and actions, to God? And why then have we made, and continue to make, that assumption?

Inquiry often reveals that many atheists feel deeply hurt by this God they claim does not exist. They harbour anger and frustration, albeit denied, at all the harm and hurt religions have caused in the name of God. All the injustice in the world; the poverty; the wars, the diseases that claim either poor people or helpless children, or both. Many atheists had some religious experience in their early years and it was disempowering. It scarred them, often deep enough to mark them forever. But is it God to blame for the ills and harms brought to bear on them by the unjust and overbearing religions of this earth? Why do we accept the claim that these religions that caused and continue to cause immense harm represent God without deeper logical and scientific inquiry that the atheists boast of?

In contemplating the above question, I would like to draw a distinction between a belief in religion, and the existence of God. The former is no indication of the latter. God does not need a religion to exist; human beings did, and many still do. God did not order the establishment of any religion; human beings did. God, does not need to prove Him/Herself to humans for us to believe in His/Her existence; it is humans who require God to Prove Him/Herself to us. Yet, rationally speaking, the human denial of God’s existence does not harm God in any way; but it does potentially harm human beings. How? Well, I’ll let you contemplate that.

Why is an atheist far more amenable to accept the place and authority of the priest or the divinely ordained royal families of the world, but not that of God? Can an atheist Britton deny the authority of the Queen of England? Can an atheist Italian deny the authority of the Pope? So here we find ourselves in a situation where human beings have arrogated themselves to a position where they can deny the existence of God, yet they are powerless to deny the position and authority of those who claim to be so, in the name of God? And we call ourselves rational and scientific? The Queen cannot prove, neither rationally nor scientifically, that she is ordained by God. Why then can’t individual Brittons deny the authority of the Queen and refuse to pay a portion of their taxes towards her upkeep?

After all, how much of what is occurring or being experienced in our world cannot be scientifically proven? So why is the imperfect, the realm of science and rationale, being used as a determinant of the existence of God? More importantly, how did it come to be that the fallible human assumed the authority to denounce God or to pronounce God non-existent?.
