Struck by a Realisation

I hope you will allow me to share some thoughts …perhaps triggered by the fact that I am always surprised at the reaction my short hair elicits amongst Muslims. It is no exaggeration that I wear my hair shorter than many Muslim men and I am yet to meet a Muslim woman who wears her hair as short as I do. To them, hair is beauty!. Thankfully I have a personality that carries it off well, despite the projections of disapproval I receive.

Anyway, my thoughts were (or rather it struck me) that my short hair was simply a reflection of my persona. One may call me progressive. Whilst most Muslims look backwards into history or the glory days of Islam I have always looked forward, yearning to be much more than what the people around me modelled or seemed to be (with the exception of my years in England).

Last weekend at the British Museum, colleagues and I spent a couple of hours looking at exhibitions on how Islam influenced western art. Again, looking into the past. Yet our reality presently is that Islam contributes little to our world today. Even the rich Arab/Gulf states produce little of what makes or sustains a civilisation. I have never heard of an exhibition of Islamic inventions or achievements today. We have none!

Most Muslim scholars or scholars studying Islam that I know study history or the anthropology of Islam. Others look at medieval texts or art or architecture or calligraphy. All pertaining to the past. Nothing new or creative. Nothing that really opens one’s mind to the future and the possibility of creativity or change, of thinking and living outside the box. Alas, it is a religion, a culture and a civilisation that is falling fast because it has been tethered to conformity with an ancient text and a way of life best suited to 6th century Arabia. The only aspect of Islamic scholarship that has copied its Western counterpart is Islamic banking and finance because millions of dollars are at stake and because the very reputation of Islam has been linked to its success.

I on the other hand have always challenged the status quo. Always questioned the past and Islam in general. If the Quran allows for slavery and for men to have sex freely with their slave women, yet all this is prohibited today, why is it that the various oppressive and regressive verses of the Quran on women are not suspended in their application as has been done pertaining to slavery?

For asking such  questions, I have been treated as a thorn (and perhaps I have been!) I have been shunned and denied opportunities because I did not “fit in” or “conform”. I know many Muslim men with far higher positions than I, be it in industry, banking or academia, yet have far fewer qualifications than I do. The one qualification they do have over me is that they are men in a culture that is patriarchal and male dominant.

As I research into “The Role of the Rule of Law in the Socio-Economic Development of Muslim Societies” – I cannot fathom why many others haven’t looked into this in a meaningful way? what could be more important to a society than the rule of law? such basic questions that seem to go unaddressed because to many the rule of law is yet another western concept being imposed on them hence they reject it with little understanding that it is in fact a concept, like justice, that applies to any people and any society. What’s more, that no decent society or civilisation can flourish without it. This was demonstrably true even at the time of Muhammad in 6th century Arabia.

In any case, my thoughts were uplifting in the sense that it finally dawned on me how it was that I was different and why I never seemed  to fit in or belong in the Muslim societies I have lived in. And that whilst I am different, I am not wrong for my difference despite having being made to feel so.
